6/8/04 - Four par 3 birdies sees Jim on flight

MALVERN golfer Jim Daly saw off stiff competition from all over the country to win June's Marks & Spencer View From Golfer of the Month.

Jim, aged 45, of Mead Way, will go on to compete in the grand final, held at the Vilamoura golf resort in Portugal, in November, staying at the Atlantis Vilamoura and the Vila Galé Marina hotels, to determine who will be the View From Golfer of the Year 2004.

A 12-handicapper from The Worcestershire GC, Jim earned more than his share of the two's sweep ball pool at an invitation day at The Worcester Golf and Country Club's Boughton Park course.

A birdie at the first par three, the 182 yard 6th hole, meant a slice of the sweep was coming Jim's way but two holes later at the 156 yard 8th he doubled his share.

No mean feat by anyone's standard but when he popped another one in for a hat-trick of two's at the 149 yard 11th, Jim was in dreamland. An incredible fourth birdie two came at the 149 yard 13th to make it an amazing four two's in just eight holes and a hefty return in the sweep.

Jim said: "Although the putts on the 6th and 13th were four to five footers, the 13th was around 15 foot and on the 8th I holed a uphill putt from 20 feet."

Playing golf for eight years, Jim has been a member at The Worcestershire for three years and played for a year at the Bank House Hotel course at Bransford.

Jim's fantastic achievement was chosen ahead of hundreds of other entries by an expert panel including European Tour professional Stephen Gallacher and Olympic rower Matthew Pinsent.

As the winner in June he will be featured in Today's Golfer magazine. As well as his trip to Portugal, he also won an outfit courtesy of title sponsor View From.
